Turn the syllabus into a checklist you can actually finish

A syllabus is a map, not a plan

Most syllabi are long lists of headings. Without a method, you read them once and then drift. Turning each heading into a trackable item makes progress visible and tells you what to drop when time is short.

Step 1: copy the official syllabus

Download the syllabus from the official website or the latest notice. Do not use a copy from a forwarded message, since topics are sometimes added or removed. Paste it into a sheet with one row per topic.

Step 2: add columns that matter

  • Weight: how often the topic appears in previous papers (high, medium, low).

  • Confidence: strong, average or weak today.

  • Source: the single book or notes you will use.

  • Practice target: number of questions you will solve.

  • Revision dates: three dates after you finish the topic.

Step 3: use previous papers to set weight

Open at least three years of previous papers and tally how many questions came from each topic. This takes an hour and saves weeks, because it shows where marks are concentrated.

Step 4: sort by value

Study high-weight, weak topics first, then high-weight average topics, then low-weight weak topics. Keep high-weight strong topics for revision only. This ordering avoids the common mistake of spending most time on topics you already like.

Step 5: define done

A topic is done only when you have finished the notes, solved the practice target with reasonable accuracy and scheduled three revisions. Colour the row green only then.

Review every Sunday

Count how many rows turned green, adjust the next week and note any topic that took longer than expected. If you are behind, remove low-weight topics before you reduce revision.

Handling syllabus changes

If the commission amends the syllabus, update the sheet immediately and mark new topics in a different colour. Keep a separate list of topics the notice has removed so that you do not waste time on them.

Using the checklist with mocks

After each mock test, tag every wrong question with a syllabus row. In a month the tags show which rows repeatedly cost you marks, and those become your next priorities.

A small example of a checklist row

Take the topic of percentages. Weight: high, because it appears in every paper you tallied. Confidence: average. Source: your chosen arithmetic book, chapters four and five. Practice target: 60 questions across three sittings. Revision dates: the next day, one week and one month after completion. When you finish the sixty questions with about 85 percent accuracy, you note the dates and mark the row green. Doing this for every topic gives you a map of your preparation in a single screen.

Make the checklist visible

Print the sheet or keep it on your phone's home screen. Seeing the count of green rows every day creates momentum, and an honest red row is more useful than a vague feeling of being behind. Share the sheet with a study partner so that both of you can compare progress without comparing scores.

A note on sources

This is general preparation guidance written by the ExamPragati editorial team. It is not a recruitment notification. Pattern, eligibility and dates differ between exams and years, so confirm them in the current official notice before you plan your calendar.
