One commission, many exam formats
The Staff Selection Commission runs several recruitment exams, and their stages differ. Graduate-level, higher-secondary-level, junior engineer and police sub-inspector exams each have their own scheme. The notice of examination is the document that fixes the scheme, so keep the PDF with you.
Application and correction window
Every exam begins with an online application, followed by a fee payment deadline. SSC usually gives a short correction window with a correction charge. Use it to fix errors, because corrections are not allowed afterwards.
Computer-based tiers
Most exams have a first computer-based tier that tests aptitude, reasoning, English and general awareness. Some have a second tier with subject papers, and certain posts need a skill test, typing test or physical standards test, usually qualifying in nature. Read the post-wise requirements before you list your preferences.
Preferences and allocation
After the written stage, SSC allots candidates to posts using merit and the preferences that you filled in. Once a post is allotted, the commission states that it will not change it later for failure to meet post-specific requirements. That is why you must read the physical, medical and educational requirements of each post before choosing preferences.
Document verification and dossiers
After the final result, selected candidates are asked to submit documents to the user department. Keep originals of educational, category, age and identity proof, and make sure the details match your application exactly.
Skill, typing and physical tests
Typing and skill tests are generally qualifying and have prescribed speeds.
Police and force recruitments include physical standards and medical examination.
Check the notice for the minimum requirement and the medium available.
City slips and admission certificates
SSC usually shows the exam city in the candidate login a few days or weeks before the exam and issues the admission certificate two or three days before the exam date. Check your login regularly instead of waiting for messages.
What you can control
Complete the form accurately, protect your login credentials, plan your preference order using the notice and practise on computer-based mocks. After the exam, keep every acknowledgement and note the result and allocation schedule listed on the website.
A candidate's timeline from start to finish
A typical journey starts when the notice appears. You read the eligibility, apply within the window, pay the fee and use the correction window if you need it. Months later the exam city appears in your login, and the admission certificate follows just before the exam. After the written stage you wait for the result, then fill in preferences or attend a skill test if your post requires it. Finally the commission releases the allocation, and the department you are assigned to calls you for document checks. Knowing the sequence makes each wait feel less random.
Keep one folder per exam
Save the notice, the application PDF, the fee receipt, the admission certificate and every later notice in a single folder. If a question arises about your candidature, you can show exactly what you submitted and when. Note the helpline number printed on the notice, and use only the official portal to raise a query.
A note on sources
This is general preparation guidance written by the ExamPragati editorial team. It is not a recruitment notification. Pattern, eligibility and dates differ between exams and years, so confirm them in the current official notice before you plan your calendar.
