What the commission tests
The Bihar Public Service Commission's preliminary stage is a general studies screening test, and a good score depends on broad coverage and steady revision. The syllabus and pattern are published on the commission's website, so start by printing them and marking each topic as strong, average or weak.
Build the core first
The core subjects are shared with other state and central exams, so your effort is reusable.
History: ancient, medieval, modern India and the freedom movement, with extra attention to Bihar's role in it.
Polity: the Constitution, institutions, rights and local government.
Geography: India and world basics, and the physical and economic geography of Bihar.
Economy: basic concepts, budgeting, banking and schemes.
Science: everyday science and environment.
Add the Bihar layer
State-level questions reward candidates who have read Bihar-specific material. Make short notes on rivers, districts, agriculture, industries, culture, festivals, historic sites and important state schemes. The annual economic survey of the state and official government publications are reliable places to check figures. Update numbers in your notes every year, because older figures go stale.
Use NCERT-style reading, then practice
Read standard school-level books for fundamentals, then switch to practice questions. After every chapter, attempt twenty questions on it, review the explanations and add only the new facts to a revision sheet.
Weekly plan
Three days: one static subject each, two hours of reading and one hour of questions.
One day: Bihar notes and state current affairs.
One day: national and international current affairs revision.
One day: sectional or full test with review.
One day: light revision and rest.
Revision and tests
Revise on a schedule: after one day, one week and one month. In the last two months, take at least one full test each week under exam timing, using the same style of answer sheet you will use on the day. Note which topics produce repeated errors and revise those first.
Staying informed
Check the commission's notices regularly. Dates, vacancies and rules are announced there, and corrections are issued from time to time. Keep your online profile details accurate and consistent with your certificates so that nothing delays you at the document stage.
Building a Bihar notes template
A simple template saves time. Make one page for each theme and keep the same five headings: what it is, where it is, why it matters, a recent development and the source you used. For example, a page on a river would note its course, the districts it touches, flood or irrigation relevance, any recent project and the publication you checked. When you revise, you only need to scan those five lines. The habit of recording a source also protects you from copying a wrong figure from an unreliable summary.
Using previous questions wisely
Solve earlier question papers of the commission by topic, not only as complete papers. Mark whether a question was factual, conceptual or based on current affairs, and notice how much weight the state-specific portion receives. This analysis tells you whether to give the next hour to static facts, to Bihar-specific revision or to analytical practice. Repeat the analysis after you read a new notice, because patterns can change.
A note on sources
This is general preparation guidance written by the ExamPragati editorial team. It is not a recruitment notification. Pattern, eligibility and dates differ between exams and years, so confirm them in the current official notice before you plan your calendar.
